The drone for SkyWay is undergoing the flight tests

The drone for SkyWay was first presented at the EcoFest 2018. Recently, it has undergone the first flight tests.

In the future, such drones with a large carrying capacity will be able to help with the construction of roads and transport infrastructure in hard-to-reach places. The use of drones will reduce the cost of delivery and installation of the structure, and reduce the cost of building string flyovers. Already today, there are several SkyWay projects that will be implemented in remote regions, where this technology will be particularly useful.

 «The complex of programs on which the drone is based, helps not only to control the movement of the module, but also independently make decisions on the set algorithms, depending on the specific situation. 

Object recognition using technical vision (based on information from optical and radar sensors), automatic route generation, positioning control, flexible interactive user interaction system are just some of the abilities of the powerful artificial intelligence.

Much attention is paid to the safety of the drone. There is applied a multiple system redundancy. More than 15 autopilots on board are working simultaneously, making decision on the logic of flight.

The high level of the control system allows the drone about 1000 times per second to calculate more than 1000 variants of the trajectories of movement and choose the optimal one, taking into account the environment, obstacles and possible malfunctions. In fact, the drone is a highly intelligent flying robot, which has not only the brain, but also specially designed high-speed actuators that replace the hands and feet of the pilot, which instantly lead to the execution of all commands in controlling the drone.

In the developed prototype KA-26 helicopter was taken as the basis of the drone, however, it could be any commercially available model of a helicopter. The main thing in the unmanned vehicle is its artificial intelligence and additionally installed actuators; the existing shell with the entire mechanical filling plays a secondary role. The ability to control the helicopter by a pilot is also provided.

Thanks to the artificial intelligence, the drone will be able to transport up to 1.5 tons of cargo at a height of several kilometers over a distance of up to 500 km at a speed of 170 km/ h in unmanned mode. Competitive cargo models, like quadrocopters and helicopters, do not have such capabilities.

Reference: The US military are using UH-1 unmanned helicopters equipped with AACUS (Autonomous Aerial Cargo Utility System), which can carry about 230 kg. The TACAD single-service devices, developed in the USA, can carry up to 800 kg. SKYF agro agricultural quadrocopter from Kazan developers lifts only up to 250-kilo load. Though impressive, these figures are quite modest against the abilities of the helicopter.

The potential scope of UAVs' with high-carrying capacity, maneuverability, height and range of flight, usage is cargo shipping, construction, agriculture, environmental protection, weather management, entertainment industry and much more. The drone will be indispensable in emergency situations, such as fires in hard-to-reach places (for example, on the roof of a skyscraper), rescue of drowning people, people who for some reason were cut off from the outside world.

The new drone has great commercial potential. & nbsp; Many countries around the world have alredy shown their interest in this development. This drone design can be further developed both as part of SkyWay, and independently, without SkyWay, on terms, favourable to developers. A roadmap for the project’s development is currently being agreed on.
